Undergraduate students in the United States who are currently receiving a Pell Grant as part of their tuition package are eligible to apply for study abroad scholarships through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program. Only citizens and nationals of the United States are eligible for this federally sponsored award, which offers up to $5,000* for a semester or academic year. Scholarships are offered for the spring, summer, and fall sessions.
The Office of Global Programs holds informational events and hours for advice throughout the semester. You can contact Gilman at gilman@nyu.edu or view the specifics here for more.
*An additional reward of up to $3,000 is available to applicants who are studying a critical need language overseas, for a possible total of $8,000.
Eligibility Criteria for the GILMAN Scholarship:
To qualify for the Gilman Scholarship, you have to be:
- an American citizen or national;
- a full-time undergraduate student at a recognized U.S. university (two-year or four-year), with excellent standing;
- During the application process, study abroad program, or internship term, a recipient of a Federal Pell Grant;
- submitting an application for, or being granted acceptance into, an academically-credited study abroad or internship program;
- applying to credit-bearing study abroad programs in a nation or region that, in the opinion of the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System, has an overall Travel Advisory Level of 1 or 2, or is on the list of authorized Travel Advisory Level 3 countries/areas. However, some places within these nations or regions might be listed in the travel advisory as “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations; as a result, students won’t be permitted to go to these particular destinations.
Note: Recipients of the Gilman Scholarship are only eligible to receive it once. Students who have previously been denied the Gilman Scholarship are welcome to reapply as long as they continue to meet the aforementioned qualifying standards.
Deadlines & Timelines for the Scholarship:
Students can study and intern abroad during the academic year or in the spring, summer, fall, or January.
